JUST IN: Senate President Akpabio Swears in PDP’s Akobundu as Senator for Abia Central

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has sworn in Col. Augustine Akobundu as the Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Akpabio directed the Clerk of the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze, to administer the oaths of office and allegiance to Akobundu before he was led to take his seat.

Akobundu replaces Darlington Nwokocha of the Labour Party (LP), who was sacked by the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, early in the month.

Nwokocha was declared the winner of the February 25, 2023, senatorial election in Abia Central with a total of 92,116 votes, while Akobundo came second with 41,477 votes.

Akobundu, a former Minister of State for Defence, took to the election petition tribunal, but his petition was thrown out for lack of merit. The Court of Appeal, however, overturned the tribunal’s decision and declared Akobundu the rightful winner of the election.
