JUST IN: Senate Urges UK Govt to Free Ekweremadu and Wife

The Senate has joined the league of prominent Nigerian citizens and parliamentary institutions in calling on the United Kingdom Government to grant amnesty to former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the plea comes less than 48 hours before the couple’s scheduled sentencing.

Senator Chukwuka Utazi (PDP, Enugu North) moved the motion during a Senate plenary session, which led to the resolution of the Senate to plead for clemency for the couple.

Ekweremadu and his wife were found guilty by a jury at the Old Bailey for conspiracy to facilitate and arrange travel with the aim of exploitation. Another defendant, Dr. Obinna Obeta, was also found guilty alongside the couple.

Justice Jeremy Johnson of the Old Bailey has set May 5, 2023, as the date for the sentencing of the convicts.

Notably, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the House of Representatives, and the Economic Committee of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, have all called on the UK Government to show mercy to the couple.
