JUST IN: Soldiers Killed as Terrorists Invade Another Military Base In Borno

At least four soldiers have been killed after suspected Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters attacked a new military base in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes.

Sources confirmed that the terrorists stormed New Marte, located in the Lake Chad Basin area, on Monday in large numbers and engaged troops in a fierce gun battle.

After hours of fighting, the insurgents overpowered the soldiers and seized control of the base.

Eyewitnesses say the town is now under the control of the terrorists. “We slept in the bush and many residents are trapped as we speak. They have taken over the military base after carting away their arms and ammunition,” a local source said.

Another resident said, “The terrorists have reacquired New Marte and we are seriously in trouble.”

Following the attack, thousands of civilians reportedly fled to nearby Dikwa town, which is about 27 kilometers from Marte. A local in Dikwa disclosed that sounds of gunfire were heard throughout the night and that a Nigerian Air Force jet was seen flying over the area.

Marte lies 38 kilometers from Dikwa, the administrative center of Dikwa Local Government Area.
