JUST IN: Stampede at Ibadan children’s carnival claims over 30 lives

A tragic stampede during a children’s carnival at Basorun Islamic High School in Ibadan, Oyo State, has reportedly claimed the lives of over 30 children, leaving many others injured.

In a statement on Wednesday, Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed the incident and noted that a government rapid response team had been swiftly mobilized.

He said victims were rushed to various hospitals across the Ibadan metropolis for urgent medical attention.

“The state government will do all it can to support the victims of this tragic incident during this difficult period,” Oyelade stated, while also expressing the government’s deepest sympathies to affected families.

Oyelade clarified that the state government was not involved in organizing the private children’s funfair, nor was the Ministry of Health asked to provide logistics for the event.

He emphasized the need for proper coordination when planning large events, particularly those involving vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.

Meanwhile, parents searching for their children have been directed to some medical facilities, where affected children are receiving care.

They include Patnas Hospital, Basorun, Western Hospital, Basorun, Ringroad State Hospital, Molly Specialist Hospital and University College Hospital, Ibadan.

Oyelade stated that valid identification is required for inquiries about victims at these locations.

He added that the government is awaiting a detailed report from the Commissioner of Police to ascertain the total number of victims.
