JUST IN: State Governors Meet in Abuja Over Minimum Wage, LG Autonomy

36 state governors in the country under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) are currently holding an emergency meeting in Abuja to discuss the proposed minimum wage and local government autonomy.

The meeting comes after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) postponed its decision on the minimum wage issue on Tuesday. The federal government, after the meeting, announced that President Bola Tinubu would engage in further consultations with the governors and the private sector before deciding on the new minimum wage.

The governors had previously rejected the federal government’s proposal of N62,000, stating that some states would need to borrow funds to pay salaries if this amount were implemented.

Meanwhile, organised labour is still demanding a N250,000 minimum wage.
