Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, has declared June 28 as the date for the celebration of Eid al-Adha, also known as Sallah.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that this occasion is marked by the traditional sacrifice of a ram, symbolising the “festival of sacrifice.”
Eid al-Adha holds great significance in Islamic culture as it commemorates the profound act of Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Isma’il, as a testament of his unwavering devotion to God. It is considered the second most important religious festival in Islam, following Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday evening by the national moonsighting committee. The Sultan expressed his heartfelt wishes for a joyous Eid al-Adha in advance, extending his greetings to the entire Muslim Ummah.
“The Sultanate Council Sokoto has declared Monday 19/June/2023 as the first day of Zul-Hijjah 1444 AH. Accordingly, Wednesday 28/June/2023 will be the day of Eid al-Adha 1444 AH,” the statement reads.
