JUST IN: Lagos state government shuts 3 popular markets with immediate effect

In a significant move to combat indiscriminate waste disposal, the Lagos State Government has taken decisive action, shutting down the Ogba City Mall in Ikeja and Ajah Market in Etti-Osa.

Government officials say the closures come as a result of severe violations of waste disposal regulations.

A joint task force comprising the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation, LASTMA, and LAGSEC (KAI) executed the closure of these commercial centres.

Additionally, the team cleared shanties and illegal traders’ structures along the Ajah BRT corridor and Ajah Jubilee Bridge.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, underscored that this stringent action is part of the government’s ongoing war against filth and irresponsible waste disposal in markets and business facilities.

He said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration remains resolute in its pursuit of a cleaner environment for the greater good of the public and vows to sustain this objective.

Managing director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, emphasized that the crackdown is an ongoing initiative and urged businesses to prioritize responsible waste disposal to maintain clean and hygienic premises.

Gbadegesin cautioned that non-compliance would result in strict enforcement action against defaulters.

“For the umpteenth time, we are encouraging all business owners and the markets to shun filth and put measures in place to guarantee responsible waste disposal in their places of operation,” he said.
