No fewer than three persons have been reportedly killed in Anara town in Isiala Mbano local government area of Imo State, Southeast Nigeria when some yet-to-identified gunmen attacked the community on Tuesday night.
Several others were also injured in the attack.
It was gathered that the gunmen arrived in a white Sienna minivan at about 10 pm and without alighting from the vehicle opened fire on unsuspecting residents who were going about their normal business.
A man who was eating at a local canteen, a passerby and a northern who was selling roasted meat commonly called ‘suya’ were reportedly shot and died on the spot while other wounded persons were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
Although the reason for the attack is not yet known, the siege has raised tension in the area.
A source said: “In fact throughout the night, we had our hearts in our mouth as sporadic gunshots not heard before took over our environment. As I am talking to you now, not even a chicken is outside.”
Although the attack was the first of its kind in Anara town, there has been incessant attacks in other areas in Imo state.
Efforts by this reporter to get comments from the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Mike Abattam, proved abortive, as he was in a meeting.
