JUST IN: Thousands of University of Ibadan students protest school fees hike [VIDEO]

Thousands of students at the University of Ibadan have taken to the streets in protest against a hike in school fees and other grievances.

Starting as early as 8 a.m., the visibly angry students blocked all entrances to the institution, preventing both academic and non-academic staff from entering the premises.

The protestors then moved from one faculty to another to ensure that all academic activities were completely halted.

The students, who sternly warned against video recording of the protest, expressed their dissatisfaction with the school management’s treatment of their concerns.

Some of the students were carrying placards, and sitting on the access road to the main gate.

Another set of students converged on the Trenchard Hall premises chanting various songs to register their protest.

One male student explained, “We are protesting against injustice and insensitivity of the state school authorities to our plight.”

Another issue raised was the announcement that the authorities would be shedding power, leaving students in darkness on certain days.

“You can imagine the authorities saying they will be shedding power henceforth, which means there are days we will be in darkness. How do they expect us to study?” one student asked.
