President Bola Tinubu has invited newly elected senators and members of the House of Representatives to a meeting at the State House in Abuja.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 8 June, commencing at 2 p.m.
The notification regarding the meeting was conveyed through a letter addressed to the Senate, which was read aloud by Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege during Wednesday’s plenary session.
“I wish to extend an invitation, through this medium, to all Senators-elect and House of Representatives members-elect to assemble at the State House on Thursday, 8th June 2023, at 2 p.m.,” the letter stated in part.
While the precise agenda for the meeting was not mentioned in the letter, speculations suggest that it will be related to the upcoming elections for the leadership of the 10th National Assembly. The election process is scheduled to occur on 13 June.
Sources indicate that Mr. Tinubu is reportedly lending his support to Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom, for the position of Senate President, with Barau Jibrin, the senator representing Kano North, as his preferred choice for Deputy Senate President.
Additionally, Tajudeen Abas from Kaduna State and Ben Kalu from Abia State have gained Mr. Tinubu’s backing for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, respectively.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has also pledged its unwavering support for these four candidates.
However, some aspirants vying for leadership positions in both chambers have rejected the President’s favoured choices, standing firm in their decision not to withdraw from the race.
