JUST IN: Tinubu nominates new CBN board member, seeks senate confirmation

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday announced the nomination of Melvin Ayogu as a member of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s board.

Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to the president on information and strategy in a statement said Tinubu has also sought the confirmation of Ayogu’s nomination by the Senate.

In addition to Ayogu’s nomination approval, the president has also asked members of the Senate to confirm the appointment of Nwakuche Ndidi as controller-general of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Onanuga said Tinubu’s request to the Senate was conveyed in a letter to its president, Godswill Akpabio and read to lawmakers on the floor of the plenary.

Recall that the president had earlier nominated Robert Agbide, Ado Wanga, Murtala Sagaley, Urom Eke, and Olayinka Aliyu to the apex bank’s board in February 2024.

Four people were confirmed by the Senate on February 29, 2024, with Eke rejecting the offer after citing “conflict of interest.”

Subsequently, on March 13, 2024, reports filtered in the the president withdrew Eke’s nomination  over her political affiliation with the Labour Party.
