Two persons have been confirmed dead, while 37 others have been injured after a two-storey building collapsed in Abuja on Wednesday night.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the building, which was located on Lagos Street in Garki Village, collapsed during a heavy downpour.
This publication understands that rescue workers are still searching for people who may be trapped under the rubble. The cause of the collapse is not yet known.
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) confirmed the death toll and said that the injured have been taken to hospitals.
“Rescue team and others are on the ground. Rescue operations are on but slowly due to ongoing rain. They are making frantic efforts at getting an excavator to remove people from the rubble,” the director-general of the FCT FEMA, Dr. Abbas Iddriss, said.
The collapsed building was reportedly used for both residential and commercial purposes.
