The United States Department of State has announced a major restriction on nonimmigrant visas for Nigerian applicants, limiting them to a single entry with a three-month validity.
The new policy took effect on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, and is part of the US government’s reciprocal nonimmigrant visa policy.
According to a statement on the department’s website, “Effective today, most nonimmigrant & non-official visas for Nigerian citizens will be single-entry with 3-month validity.”
Until February 27, 2023, Nigerians applying for B1/B2 visas — used for business and tourism — were granted two-year multiple entry validity.
That was upgraded to a five-year multiple-entry visa from February 2023, before the sudden reversal.
The US government clarified that the new rule would only apply to visas issued from July 8, 2025.
There is no official response yet from the Nigerian government.
