United States Vice President Kamala Harris has revealed that she has spoken with President Bola Tinubu about defending democracy in West Africa Friday morning.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the two leaders discussed the recent coup attempt in Niger Republic.
Harris expressed her support for Tinubu’s efforts to ensure that the country’s democratically-elected government is not overthrown.
Harris also highlighted the strong ties between the United States and Nigeria, and said that she and Tinubu agreed to work together to promote democracy and economic growth in the region.
In a statement on X, Harris said that she and Tinubu “committed to working together to defend democracy in West Africa and the Sahel, and to promoting digital inclusion and economic growth.”
“We also discussed the importance of strengthening the rule of law and human rights in the region,” Harris said.
Tinubu, who is the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has criticised military coups in the region.
In a statement on Wednesday, Tinubu said that the ECOWAS leadership will not accept any action that impedes the smooth functioning of legitimate authority in Niger or any part of West Africa.
“We shall not waiver or flinch on our stand to defend and preserve constitutional order,” Tinubu said.
