JUST IN: “We Are Meeting Demands in Phases” – FG Insists ASUU Not on Strike

The Federal Government has dismissed speculations of an ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), maintaining that Nigeria’s public university system remains stable and fully operational.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made this known in Abuja during a press briefing on Tuesday.

Mr Alausa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to dialogue, staff welfare, and the phased implementation of agreed demands.

“It is not by coincidence that Nigerian public tertiary institutions have remained open and stable for the past two years—something that has not happened in several decades,” Dr. Alausa stated.

“This is a reflection of our government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining cordial relationships with all stakeholders in the education sector. We are meeting demands in phases, and we are doing so respectfully and consistently.”

He said that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to uninterrupted academic activities and improving the nation’s human capital.

“Our children are the heartbeat of the nation, and their uninterrupted education is non-negotiable. The Federal Government will continue to engage all unions in the education sector to ensure the gates of our institutions remain open,” he added.

The Minister also urged the public to disregard false reports suggesting a fresh strike by ASUU, stressing that current stability across campuses was a shared achievement that must not be undermined by misinformation.

His clarification follows recent concerns about potential industrial action after delayed salary payments to ASUU members for June 2025. However, those concerns appear to have been resolved before the situation escalated.

The Chairman of the University of Abuja branch of ASUU, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, confirmed that the union suspended its planned withdrawal of services after members began receiving their June salaries late Monday night.

“The June 2025 salary of our members started to drop before the end of the 11:59 pm Monday 7th July 2025 ultimatum given by ASUU UniAbuja,” Dr. Ugoh said.

“Therefore, the Branch did not activate the withdrawal of service as earlier resolved by Congress.”
