Sunday Igboho, a Yoruba Nation activist, was released from protective custody in Benin Republic on Sunday.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that his release was confirmed by Yoruba Nation Leader Prof. Banji Akintoye in a statement.
Igboho was arrested in Benin Republic in July 2021 while on his way to Germany. He had fled Nigeria after a raid on his residence by the Department of State Services (DSS), which accused him of stockpiling arms.
The DSS had raided his Soka residence in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, accusing him of stockpiling arms.
Igboho’s lawyer had called on the government of Benin Republic to prevent his extradition to Nigeria on the grounds of security and threat to his life.
A local newspaper in Benin Republic, Banouto, had quoted the authorities as saying Igboho was nabbed at Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou.
