#JusticeForUwa: UNIBEN issues statement on rape, murder of 100 level student

The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has decried the news of the rape and subsequent murder of one of its students, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.

The victim was a 100-level Microbiology student of the institution before her travail. POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Miss Omozuwa was brutalised by unknown men when she went for Bible study in a branch of RCCG, Edo Province 10, Ikpoba Hill, Benin.

The 22-year old was brutally raped and severely beaten on May 27, 2020. According to reports, the men made their way into the church auditorium where they struck her in the head with a fire extinguisher, raped her and left her dead.

This has however caused a stir on social media as many Nigerians demand justice for the deceased using the hashtag #JusticeforUwa on Sunday.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Lilian Salami, in a statement through the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, described the news as shocking.

In the statement made available to journalists on Sunday in Benin, the VC said the actions were condemnable and should not be condoned by any society.

She said the current COVID-19 pandemic was already hard on everyone and that compounding it with inflicting additional pain on any family was a wicked act.

While commiserating with the bereaved family on the loss of their daughter, Mrs Salami prayed to God to grant her soul peaceful rest.

The vice-chancellor urged students of the institution and indeed all young people to be wary of the company they kept and the places they visited.

Meanwhile, a delegation had been sent by the university’s management to commiserate with the bereaved family.

Mind the company or friends you keep…this is very very vital.Who knows who’s behind this horrible act?? But one thing i know too well…the culprits must be brought to book sooner than expected! God never sleeps and neither slumber. No matter where these culprits has hidden….no way! God is seeing you and justice must prevail. There’s no two ways about it.He is God yesterday, today and forever!
