Kaduna State Assembly summons officials of El-Rufai’s govt as probe of ex-governor continues

The ad-hoc committee established by the Kaduna State House of Assembly to investigate the eight-year administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai has summoned several former and current government officials.

Former Governor El-Rufai served as the state governor from May 2015 to May 2023.

In a statement by the Media Aide to the Speaker of the House, Suraj Bamalli, the summoned individuals include Thomas Gyang, former Commissioner of the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure; Ja’afaru Sani, former Commissioner of the Ministry of Education; Dr. Manzo Maigari, former Commissioner of Agriculture (currently serving as political adviser to the governor).

Others are Balarabe Aliyu, former Administrator of Zaria Metropolitan Authority; Phoebe Sukai, former Administrator of Kafanchan Metropolitan Authority; and Mohammed Magaji, former Managing Director of the Kaduna State Roads Agency (KADRA), among others.

The House constituted the committee on April 16, following revelations by Governor Uba Sani that he inherited substantial debts from his predecessor, making it challenging to pay workers’ salaries.

Governor Sani made the disclosure during a town hall meeting on May 30, 2024, that he inherited $587 million in foreign debt, N85 billion in local debt, and N115 billion in contractual liabilities.

In an interview with journalists in Kaduna, the committee’s chairman, Henry Danjuma, emphasized that anyone implicated during the testimonies before the committee would be called upon to respond to the allegations.

Anyone implicated during the testimonies from those summoned before the committee will be invited to respond to such allegations. Such individuals will be called upon to appear based on the allegations,” Danjuma stated.
