The portrait of dethroned Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has reappeared at the main Coronation Hall of the State Government House, causing fear and uncertainty among the five Kano emirate councils created by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that there has been speculation that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf plans to reinstate Sanusi as the sole Emir of Kano instead of the five existing emirs.
Former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had fragmented the State Emirate Councils into five of main Kano, Rano, Karaye, Bichi and Gaya, with the Emir of Kano as the Chairman of the State Councils of Emirs.
Recall that the state government denied moves to reinstate Sanusi. However, the recent resurfacing of his portrait at the main coronation hall has led to speculations.
In reaction to the speculations, Governor Yusuf’s spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said the portrait was replaced as part of the ongoing rehabilitation of the coronation hall.
He said that the hall was built for Sanusi’s presentation of the staff of office after he was crowned as the emir in 2014 and that his portrait is, therefore, traditionally supposed to remain there forever.
He said, “The history of the coronation hall is synonymous to the 14th emir of Kano Malam Muhammadu Sanusi because it was built for his presentation of staff of office after he was crowned as the emir succeeding late Alhaji Ado Bayero in 2014 during the administration of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
“So traditionally, his picture shall remain there forever. Bringing back the picture of the 14th is part of the ongoing rehabilitation to give the coronation hall a face lift.”
