The recently inaugurated governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has demolished a roundabout structure near the government house.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that this structure was erected by the previous governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.
Recall that the new administration has defended the demolition in the state, describing it as part of Governor Yusuf’s commitment to restoring the city’s urban development masterplan.
During his inaugural speech on May 29, Governor Yusuf had specifically directed security agents to begin demolishing any structures believed to have been constructed “illegally” by the previous administration.
The issue of the demolition exercise earned the attention of President Bola Tinubu, who requested former governors of Kano, Rabiu Kwankwaso (who backs Yusuf’s actions) and Abdullahi Ganduje, to discuss the matter.
As previously reported by this newspaper, Governor Ganduje expressed his dissatisfaction with the demolition during a briefing with State House reporters after the meeting with President Tinubu. Referring to Kwankwaso, he stated, “I know he is in the building, but we have not met. Probably if we met, maybe I could have slapped him.”
Despite the discussions and meetings surrounding the demolition, the exercise has proceeded in the state.
The roundabout structure, which was admired by many residents and stood near the Kano government house, has now been completely demolished.
Since assuming office, the new government has been actively demolishing and revoking various structures across the state. Notable demolitions include a three-storey building with 90 shops located at Nasarawa GRA, shops constructed near the fence of Sani Abacha Stadium at Kofar Mata, and buildings near GGSS Dukawuya and Goron Dutse. Additionally, the Kano Hajj camp and Daula Hotel have also been affected by the ongoing demolition exercise, among other structures.
