JUST IN: Winner emerges in Kenya 2022 election

William Ruto, the Deputy President of Kenya, has won the country’s presidential election.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Wafula Chebukati on Monday declared Ruto the winner of the country’s close-fought presidential poll.

He said Ruto had won almost 7.18 million votes (50.49 percent) against 6.94 million (48.85 percent) for his rival Raila Odinga in the August 9 election.

It is the first time Ruto, 55, had run for president. He served as deputy president for 10 years but fell out with President Uhuru Kenyatta, who backed Odinga to succeed him.

Meanwhile, four of the seven members of the electoral commission refused to endorse the announcement, saying the results were “opaque”.

Odinga’s party agent earlier alleged that there were “irregularities” and “mismanagement” in the election.
