Kogi governor approves N600 million WAEC fees for 18,734 students

The governor of Kogi State has approved the payment of over N600 million as payment for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for 18,734 Senior Secondary Three (SS3) students in the state.

Wemi Jones, Kogi state’s commissioner for education said the funds would cover the examination fees for over 18,000 students in Kogi public schools.

According to Jones, the move by the governor is in line with the law for free examination registration fees for all students in public primary and secondary schools.

A continuation of former governor Yahaha Bello’s initiative, Jones said the law had made it mandatory for the government to pay for all internal and external examinations.

Noting that the payment for the fees would be done in batches, Jones said

“In 2023/2024 registration, the state government enrolled over 15,000 students for the examination.

“In 2024/2025, the state is enrolling 18,734 students for WAEC across the 21 local government areas,” he said.
