A senior lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Kogi State, Dr Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, has died in a hotel room during an alleged sexual encounter with a 200-level female student.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at a hotel in Anyigba and was later reported to the police by the hotel’s manager.

Spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Aya, confirmed the incident on Friday in Lokoja.

He described the situation as “unfortunate” and disclosed that an autopsy had been carried out to determine the exact cause of death.

According to police reports, the hotel manager, Moses Friday, said the student, identified as 22-year-old Gloria Samuel, rushed to the reception to report that the lecturer had collapsed during their time together.

Ibikunle was immediately taken to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.

The police said the student was arrested and taken into custody before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

A student who spoke anonymously to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) claimed the lecturer was engaged in sexual intercourse with the student before he collapsed.

Sources allege that Dr Ibikunle, a married man and lecturer in the Department of Social Studies Education, had consumed multiple energy drinks prior to the incident.

The police said investigations are ongoing and further action would depend on the outcome of the findings.
