Former Kano State governor and national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has finally reacted to reports suggesting that Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso issued a stern warning to party members, saying history has shown that anyone who betrays the NNPP never ends well politically.

His remarks have intensified political tension in Kano amid ongoing defection rumours surrounding the governor.

The NNPP leader spoke while addressing his supporters at a gathering in Kano.

In a video from the event, Kwankwaso expressed disappointment over reports that some party members were considering leaving the NNPP. He, however, said he was not surprised by the development.

“What I am seeing is even beyond what I expected because I am aware that few, very few of you have decided to cross to the other side, don’t worry, whoever knows them, advise them,” he said.

Kwankwaso praised his loyalists for turning out in large numbers despite the alleged moves by some political figures to align with the governor.

He said the crowd at the meeting showed that the NNPP still enjoys strong grassroots support in the state.

“I’m very glad with the turnout today because I didn’t expect to see so many faces here, because I thought they would follow the governor’s camp. But I want to remind the others who left us that nobody has betrayed us and succeeded,” he added.

His comments come amid sustained reports that Governor Yusuf is preparing to leave the NNPP for the APC.

Political discussions within Kano have been dominated by speculation about the governor’s next move and the possible impact on the state’s political structure.

It was gathered that consultations have been ongoing between the governor and key political stakeholders across the state. These discussions reportedly involved members of the Kano State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, and federal lawmakers.

Despite the growing speculation, Governor Yusuf has not made any official announcement confirming plans to defect.

However, political allies of the APC believe the move could happen soon, with or without the approval of his former political mentor.
