The Labour Party crisis took a dramatic turn on Tuesday when the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) national transition committee members staged a surprise protest at the party’s Abuja headquarters, demanding the immediate removal of National Chairman Julius Abure from office.
The committee was led by Acting Chairman, Aduwaheed Omar.
The labour union members converged on the secretariat, chanting solidarity songs and demanding Abure’s exit on the grounds that his tenure had expired.
However, their attempt to enter the premises was met with resistance from security officials, who shut the gates upon their arrival.
Undeterred, the protesters attempted to force their way in, prompting the police to fire teargas to disperse them. The demonstrators refused to back down, shouting “open the gate” as they continued to press for entry.
