Labour Party suspends ex-Lagos chair, dissolves ward executives over anti-party activities

The Labour Party (LP) in Lagos has announced the suspension of Dayo Ekong, former state chairman of the party, and Sam Okpala, over alleged gross misconduct and breach of the party’s constitution.

The party also dissolved all local government and ward executive committees across the state.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by Rotimi Odunaike and Dorcas Omorodion, chairman and secretary of the Lagos state caretaker committee of the LP, respectively.

The statement, which was made available to journalists on Monday, followed a meeting of the caretaker executive committee held on May 11.

Odunaike said all members of the former state executive committee have been suspended for six months for anti-party activities.

Part of the statement read: “The former state chairman of the party, Pastor Mrs Dayo Ekong, is hereby suspended for six months for gross misconduct and breach of the constitution of the party by holding the offices of the state chairman and national financial secretary at the same time.

“All the members of the erstwhile state executive committee are hereby suspended for six months for failure to uphold the constitution of the party and for anti-party activities.”

The caretaker committee also announced the dissolution of the local government and ward executives appointed by the Ekong-led administration.

“All the local government and ward executive committees in Lagos state appointed by the Pastor (Mrs) Dayo Ekong-led exco are hereby dissolved and their members suspended for six months for anti-party activities, with immediate effect,” the committee said.
