Hajiya Ladi Bako, the pioneer First Lady of Kano State, has died.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Hajiya Bako’s demise was announced by her family in a statement.
This newspaper learned that Bako passed away in Kano after a lengthy illness. She died aged 93.
Her husband, Audu Bako, was the first Governor of Kano State during the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon.
One of the former First Lady’s sons died, thus Hajiya Bako was survived by two sons and three daughters among them Zainab Audu Bako, a lady politician and technocrat.
Her funeral prayer will be held at 2pm today (Wednesday) at Kofar Kudu Emirs Palace Kano, in accordance with Islamic rite.
In a tribute, President Muhammadu Buhari described the wife of the late governor as one of the most powerful women in the political system during their time.
The president said: “The late Hajiya Ladi was a great lady. She defined an era and will always be remembered for her faithfulness to her family and the Kano community.
“May Allah give courage and perseverance to those she left behind to bear this irreparable loss.”
