The Lagos State Government has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance for hawking in some areas, especially the Third Mainland Bridge and Eko Bridge.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Gaji Omobolaji, in a statement on Wednesday, declared zero tolerance for street trading in the areas, while reading the riot act to street traders in the state.
Omobolaji explained that the ministry’s position is in line with the T.H.E.M.E.S. Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu which advocates a cleaner environment for all Lagosians.
Speaking further, he stated in clear terms that violators of the state’s environmental laws will be prosecuted at the established Mobile Courts, while their wares will be confiscated.
Omobolaji said: “The latest enforcement drive against street traders when commenced, would be a continuous one that would also be sustained.”
According to him, Lagos, a megacity developing into a smart city, has no place for street traders who not only constitute an eyesore to the aesthetics of the city and exposed themselves to hazardous situations but also pose a threat to the security of lives and property.
The permanent secretary added that Governor Sanwo-Olu had approved the enforcement which would be carried out by Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) operatives in collaboration with other security agencies.
