The Lagos state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to challenge the recent ruling by the Appeal Court affirming Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s victory in the March 18 gubernatorial election.
In an interview with journalists in Lagos, Hakeem Amode, the Lagos state PDP Publicity Secretary, announced the party’s decision to pursue further legal action.
Amode expressed dissatisfaction with the Appeal Court’s judgment, highlighting the belief that justice had not been adequately served in the petitions brought forward by the PDP’s governorship candidate, Olajide Adediran.
“We are taking our case to the Supreme Court to challenge the Appeal Court’s ruling affirming Sanwo-Olu as the winner. Our petitions will reach the Supreme Court in the coming days,” stated Amode, emphasizing the party’s confidence in the apex court to address the critical aspects of the matter.
The PDP spokesman criticized what he perceived as inconsistencies in the Appeal Court’s decisions on pre-election matters and stressed the party’s commitment to seeking justice despite setbacks at lower courts.
The Appeal Court’s dismissal of Adediran’s 34 grounds of appeal and its stance on the qualification of Governor Sanwo-Olu and his deputy were cited as pivotal reasons for the PDP’s decision to escalate the legal battle to the Supreme Court.
Previously, the election tribunal and the Appeal Court had dismissed petitions filed by Adediran and the Labour Party candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Viviour, contesting Sanwo-Olu’s victory in the gubernatorial election.
The party has a window of 14 days from the date of the Appeal Court’s ruling to file the appeal at the Supreme Court. Subsequently, the Supreme Court will have 60 days to review the case and issue a final judgment.
