The House of Representatives has categorically dismissed recent allegations, denying claims of receiving a hefty sum of $15 million from the executive arm.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that these allegations suggested that the money was intended to secure approval for the request to restructure N22.7 trillion ways and means advances.
As previously reported by this newspaper, President Muhammadu Buhari had sought the House’s approval to restructure the substantial loan obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
However, in a statement issued on Friday, House Spokesperson Benjamin Kalu declared the allegations to be entirely false, baseless, and lacking any foundation.
Kalu emphasised, “As elected representatives, our decisions and actions are always driven by the best interests of the public. It is important to note that the House had temporarily deferred the approval of the executive’s request in line with the recommendations put forth by the relevant committees. These committees called for further engagement with the executive to enable a comprehensive and meticulous analysis and deliberation on the public interventions for which the executive had earmarked the aforementioned request.”
“We implore the media to exercise restraint and desist from disseminating unfounded allegations that have the potential to tarnish the reputation of public institutions and individuals, particularly during this critical period when lawmakers are deeply engrossed in the political competition for the leadership positions in the impending 10th National Assembly.”
