“Let Emefiele breathe” – Northern group sends stern warning to security agencies

The Concerned Northern Forum, has asked security agencies of the federal government to let the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to “breathe” after being granted bail by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The group’s chairman, Comrade Ali Sani, in a statement noted thag although the judge exacted a promise from Emefiele‘s lawyers to present him in the court for trial whenever needed and also to deposit his international passport in the court, the condition which was immediately fulfilled by the defendant’s counsel and Emefiele was released into their custody.

The trial judge of the Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja, Olukayode Adeniyi, had on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, released Emefiele to his lawyers after being unlawfully detained for 151 days.

However, multiple news reports on Thursday suggested that Emefiele would soon return to custody.

“It is however disappointing that certain media organisations too busy being prejudiced and controversial would publish that there is a controversy of any sort over the judgement,” the group said.

“This is why these kinds of organisations should not be allowed to continue to publish in any legal entity as their intent is more to heat the polity than to publish real news.

“It is a fact that the honourable judge could not deny the fact that the fundamental human rights of the man who served the country for over nine years and in the private sector could not be denied. It is the right of any individual, having served or otherwise to enjoy fundamental human rights,” the statement added.
