Makurdi 12-hour downpour leaves state capital flooded

The residents of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Monday, witnessed flooding due to a downpour that lasted almost 12 hours.

The rain began with a light shower around 10 p.m. on Sunday, increased in intensity around 4 a.m. on Monday, and lasted till around 10 a.m.

This resulted in flooding in areas such as Wurukum, Achusa and some parts of Gboko road.

Also, Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University students, formerly the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, were stranded in the early hours of Monday as they needed help accessing the road to the university campus.

A student union leader at FUAM, Mimidoo Gundu, lamented the situation and called for urgent intervention.

She said, “This Monday morning, water blocked the road that links SRS Junction to Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, around Antsa and Ichwa, respectively.

“This has been a huge obstacle for staff members and students to get to school, and it is very disheartening. I urge the federal/state government and the school management to look into this problem before it gets worse and damages the road.”

Also, a resident of Achusa who identified himself as Tony said his house was flooded while his household items were all soaked.
