Health workers under the umbrella of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), and Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) have commenced a three-day warning strike in Lagos State.
The strike action by the unions followed the expiration of an ultimatum handed to the government by the unions over the failure to adjust the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).
The secretary of NANNM, Oloruntoba Odumosu said the strike action became inevitable after a meeting with officials of Lagos state on December 9 ended without any definitive resolution on the demands by the health workers.
According to Odumosu, the Lagos state government failed to provide a tangible timeline for the implementation of the demands of the unions.
She said, “We reported the feedback to the Congress, which was ongoing at our secretariat, and it unanimously voted ‘No,’ insisting on proceeding with the strike.”
The NANNM secretary also stated that the warning strike will commence on December 11 and continue until December 13, 2024, to drive home the importance of their demands to improving the health industry.
