The Senate on Monday, August 7, became rowdy following a motion by Senator Darlington Nwokocha, representing Abia Central senatorial district, that former minister Festus Keyamo should be dropped.
Delta-born Keyamo has been nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu months after serving in former President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet.
Nwokwocha’s motion was supported by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South senatorial district.
As Senate President Godswill Akpabio motioned to a voice vote, the ‘nays’ were just as loud as the ‘ayes’ as a rancorous session ensued.
Consequently, the Senate resolved to go into a closed session to settle the issue while journalists were asked to leave the chamber.
Senator Nwokwocha had argued that Keyamo ignored the summon of parliament in 2022 over the employment scheme of 774,000 Nigerians recruited for the special public works programme while he was a minister in Buhari’s administration.
