Moghalu warns FG over plans to ‘tinker’ with signed Electoral Act

A 2023 presidential aspirant, Kingsley Moghalu, on Thursday warned President Muhammadu Buhari not to succumb to the antics of ‘cabals’ by tinkering with the amended Electoral Act 2022.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Moghalu gave this caution while addressing chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other attendees, during his official declaration to contest the 2023 presidential election.

Recall this newspaper reported on Wednesday that the Federal Government said it is poised to explore all options available in respect of the Electoral Act.

The Executive said it is weighing its options on the Senate’s refusal to consider the request of President Muhammadu Buhari to delete section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act.

According to Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), the government has three options: seek a reconsideration, approach the court, or accept the law as it is.

But reacting, Moghalu, a former Deputy-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said: “I want to commend the National Assembly and the president for passing and signing the Electoral bill.

“I urge the president to move away from trying to challenge the senate rejection, trying to get an amendment to the amended bill. You have amended the bill why do you want to amend it again. Because some special interest and cabal are pushing for it. I urge the president to respect democracy.

“I heard the Federal Government is trying to go to court to compel the legislature to pass a bill according to your desire, that is Executive dictatorship and we will not tolerate it in this country.

“Let us prepare for the elections with the hope that the elections will be more free and fair than the ones we have had before.”
