A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former presidential aspirant, Aare Dele Momodu, says he no longer believes in the party’s direction, despite still being a member.
Speaking on Tuesday during the “Guest of the Month” programme on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) in Ibadan, the media entrepreneur said internal conflicts and sabotage have weakened the PDP’s ability to function as a viable opposition.
“My soul has already left the PDP; only my body remains,” he said.
Momodu noted that while the PDP has the structure and experience to take on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, internal divisions and external interference could prevent it from reclaiming power.
“If PDP is united, it has all it takes to wrest power from the APC in 2027, but there are forces working against this both within and outside the party,” he said.
He alleged that the APC is deliberately fueling disunity in the opposition by encouraging factionalisation and infiltration.
“The APC is jittery because the PDP remains its most formidable challenger. That’s why efforts are being made to divide the party,” he said.
Momodu added that some PDP members are being used to destabilise the party from within, warning that without internal cohesion, the 2027 presidential race would be out of reach.
“There is no way a disunited PDP can win in 2027. Some of our members are working against the party’s stability and progress,” he said.
However, he maintained that the PDP remains law-abiding in dealing with erring members, relying on due process and the rule of law.
“The party always follows laid-down procedures when it comes to suspension or expulsion. It is not arbitrary,” he said.
On the possibility of unseating President Tinubu in 2027, Momodu said only a coalition of like-minded political forces can present a serious challenge.
“It’s nearly impossible to remove Tinubu without a strong, united coalition. And the candidate who will stand a real chance must come from the opposite geopolitical direction,” he added.
