Nigeria’s senior male basketball team, D’Tigers, has officially withdrawn from the 2025 AfroBasket qualifiers, citing a lack of funds as the primary reason.
On Wednesday night, the team announced its decision through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
The withdrawal comes despite commitments from several 2020 Olympians who were ready to participate in the qualifiers.
D’Tigers, the reigning AfroBasket champions, expressed regret over the financial constraints that led to their decision to forfeit the AfroBasket Qualifiers window.
The team was initially drawn into Group B, alongside Uganda, Cape Verde, and Libya, for the first window of the qualifiers, scheduled to take place in Tunisia starting Friday.
The AfroBasket 2025 qualification process is set to be held between February and November 2024, with 16 nations ultimately earning a spot in the FIBA AfroBasket 2025 tournament.
The AfroBasket is a crucial platform for African basketball teams to showcase their talent, compete at the highest level, and qualify for the FIBA AfroBasket, a major continental championship.
