NAFDAC moves against fake eye drop distributors in South-South state

A syndicate that specialises in distributing fake eye drops to the public in Rivers State has been apprehended by operatives of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC).

It was gathered that the syndicate poses as missionaries and caregivers to render eye care services to some inspecting Nigerians in the state.

Chukwuma Oligbu, the Director, South-South Zone of NAFDAC, said the syndicates cover blew when some individuals who were administered the eye had their eyes swollen.

While the doctor behind the scam is still at large, Oligbu said operatives of the agency were able to arrest one Gladys Theophilus.

He noted that Theophilus was attending to patients when operatives stormed the location from which the syndicates operated.

He also said that some substances were also oozing from the eyes of the users of the dangerous eyedrop and drugs administered by the team operating at the Community Town Hall, Abuloma, Port Harcourt Local Government Area.

According to Oligbu, the drugs had no NAFDAC registration or listed composition.

Also, no manufacturing address or export date was made available on the packs of the drugs, which were named Evangelist Jenkins Supernatural Water, Evangelist Jenkins Cleanser, Evangelist Jenkins Eye Drop, among others.

Advising the public against patronising such groups or individuals, NAFDAC said the syndicate claimed the product was produced to treat goitre, cancer, piles, arthritis, rashes, fibroids, cataracts and glaucoma, among others.
