NAFDAC Speaks on Consumption of ‘Plastic-containing’ Semolina

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has assured Nigerians that all semolina products registered by the body are safe for human consumption.

The Director General of the Agency, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, refuted claim about social media video showing a woman washing GoldenPenny Semovita in a sieve using cold water.

According to the woman, the residue she got after sieving was plastic.

Adeyeye revealed that a similar video was shown in 2020 but upon investigation by the agency, the results showed that there was no plastic or any similar harmful contaminants in Golden Penny Semovita as it contained the expected components and the required Vitamin A.

She added that Semolina contains mainly water, carbohydrates, and about 13 per cent of gluten-forming proteins.

“Semolina has no plastic content in it; it only exhibits viscous and elastic properties. The rubbery-like material that was observed in the video after washings with water is the gluten that formed after the gluten-forming proteins get mixed with water,” she said.

The NAFDAC boss described the viral social media video as misleading and urged the public to disregard it.
