The political ambience in Nasarawa state is set to rise as the Supreme Court will, on Tuesday, January 16th, hear an appeal challenging the election of Governor Abdullahi Sule.
The case, which is one of the matters on the court’s schedule for Tuesday, will seek to resolve the controversy surrounding the March 2023 governorship poll.
Recall that the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal had sacked Governor Sule and declared his rival, David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the rightful winner of the election. Judge Ezekiel Ajayi, leading a split decision of 2-1, ruled that Ombugadu had successfully demonstrated, through witness testimonies, that the election results were tampered with to favour Sule.
However, the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned this decision. The appellate court judges held that the tribunal had made a critical error in accepting the evidence of eight PDP witnesses, whose statements were not submitted along with the initial petition. This prompted Ombugadu’s appeal to the Supreme Court.
