A member of the House of Representatives, Adejoro Adeogun, has downplayed the threat by some of his colleagues in the National Assembly to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that minority lawmakers had during a press briefing held at the National Assembly before proceeding on a two-month annual recess, threatened to commence the process of impeachment at the expiration of six weeks’ ultimatum, if President Buhari failed to address the country’s security challenges.
Responding to the issue, Adeogun stated that it “would be difficult” to remove Buhari from office especially as the general election is just roughly seven months away.
“The minority caucus is doing what minorities in parliaments do – providing a robust opposition,” Adeogun told Punch in an interview published on Wednesday.
“Bear in mind that we are a few months away from a general election and the opposition needs to occupy the media space to sell their candidates.
“So, it is all politics. Every member of the National Assembly is aware of the constitutional requirement for impeachment and why it would be difficult to achieve months before a general election, especially in a fragmented nation like Nigeria.”
