The National Economic Council (NEC) has deferred making its final decision on state policing to January 2025, the governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani has said.
Sani made the disclosure on Thursday, December 12, after a NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa.
He said, “One of the discussions we had at the NEC meeting was the update on the creation of state police. As you are aware, there was a submission by states towards the establishment of state police.”
He also said that governors of all the 36 states across the country have agreed to state police with the aim to address the insecurity across the country.
The governor said all stages, with the exception of the FCT have brought in their report on the issue of state policing.
Sani said, “Today, about 36 states have already made their submission for establishing state police in Nigeria and I can say here that from what is available, virtually most of the states are in agreement with the establishment of state police in Nigeria.
“But today, the council decided to step down the discussion until the next council meeting, because we need to come up with a report from the secretariat and after the report, there will be deliberation at the next NEC meeting that is likely taking place in January.
According to Sani, the NEC secretariat would engage with stakeholders tto bring them up to speed on the matter before the council’s next meeting in January 2025.
He said at the next meeting, a comprehensive report woild be submitted.
