Navy overcomes kidnappers during 3-hour gun battle, rescue kidnapped foreign sailors

After three hours of gun battle between special troops of the Nigerian Navy and sea pirates who kidnapped foreign sailors in Bayelsa state, three foreign sailors were rescued while arresting one of the pirates.

The incident took place between Tuesday night and early hours of Wednesday. It could be recalled that these pirates had killed four Nigerian Navy ratings during the kidnap of the sailors.

Personnel of the Forward Operations Base (FOB) Igbokoda at its Awoye outpost had been laying siege since the incident took place at Agge in Bayelsa state.

On receiving intelligence report at about 11 pm, of an approaching speed boat suspected to be carrying kidnappers and victims of kidnapping, the naval Special Forces were deployed in some gunboats to the entrance of the Sea and fire exchange ensued between them.

Despite opening fire on them, the kidnappers were overpowered by the naval forces in a tactical manoeuvre, not to hurt the kidnapped victims.

They later trailed the suspects who beach landed at a nearby creek and fled into the bush.

After combing the general environment with the support of community youths and backup of naval personnel from Idi-Ogba and Abereke outpost, one of the suspects named Martins Egenuvhe from Olopa Community in Bayelsa state was arrested with a rifle.

Three Of the foreign nationals were rescued after some hours,and they and they have been evacuated to naval base for further investigation.
