NBC Fines Arise News, Channels, AIT Over #EndSARS Coverage, Lekki Shooting

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has fined three Nigerian television stations N3m each for showing the EndSARS protests and the violence that followed in parts of the country.

The NBC acting Director-General, Prof Armstrong Idachaba, at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, named the stations as Channels Television, Africa Independent Television. (AIT) and Arise News.

Idachaba noted that the broadcast stations were fined over their “unprofessional coverage” of the EndSARS protests and violating the broadcasting code. He added that the stations were guilty of airing unverified images of the Lekki shooting.

Idachaba who added that DAAR Communications, owners of AIT, will be fined separately for using an unverifiable news item on the fire incident at the National Christian Centre. He warned that this will be the last warning before a heavier sanction will be introduced.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the stations were among the television stations in the country that showed the protests in Lagos and other parts of the country. The protest, which began on a peaceful note has since gone violence, with many states experience wanton destructions and looting of public and private properties.

In Lagos, the protesters gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate and at the Government Secretariat in Alaua, Ikeja to call for the dissolution of SARS and an end to police brutality.
