Brazilian football star Neymar Jr. could be in line for an extraordinary windfall after reports emerged that a billionaire businessman from Porto Alegre left his entire estate to the player, despite the two men never having met.
Local outlet RIC reported that the will, said to be worth approximately £846 million, was lodged with a notary office in Porto Alegre and officially registered on June 12 in the presence of two witnesses. The inheritance, however, must still go through Brazil’s legal system before Neymar can be formally declared the beneficiary.
A Personal Connection
According to accounts in Brazilian media, the late businessman had no children or spouse and reportedly felt a deep admiration for Neymar. He is said to have been inspired by the forward’s close relationship with his father, Neymar Sr., which reminded him of his own bond with his late father.
The choice to name Neymar as his heir has stunned many in Brazil, given that there is no evidence the pair ever crossed paths. The unusual bequest has already raised speculation that the will may face challenges in court.
Neymar’s Silence
Neymar, who is 33, has not publicly commented on the reports. The forward, once the world’s most expensive player, recently returned to his boyhood club Santos after an underwhelming stint with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal.
Since rejoining Santos in January, he has made 14 appearances and scored three goals. His return was capped in June when he signed a contract extension, a move that could keep him in contention for Brazil’s national team squad at the 2026 World Cup.
What Happens Next
For now, the case rests with the Brazilian courts, which must verify the will and determine if Neymar can legally inherit the vast fortune. Should the process go through without challenge, the player could find himself not only back in the headlines for his football but also as the unexpected heir to one of the largest personal fortunes in Brazil.
