Nigeria Coach Rohr New Contract

Football coaches play a crucial role in a team’s success. Gernot Rohr is a renowned German coach who was born on June 28, 1953. Rohr’s Achievements as the Super Eagles’ Coach

Amaju Pinnick, President of the Nigeria Football Federation named Gernot Rohr as the manager of the Super Eagles in August 2016. The German coach won the first match with the national team after defeating Tanzania 1-0 in Uyo, Nigeria. He later lost his first game on June 10 after South Africa defeated Nigeria 2-0.

Rohr led the Super Eagles through the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. It became the first African football team to qualify for the tournament on October 7, 2017. The German coach took the Nigerian national football team to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and it finished third in the competition. Rohr Signs a New Contract with the Nigerian Football Federation

Amaju Melvin, President of the Nigeria Football Federation announced that the federation had signed a two and a half year contract with Rohr. NFF instructed the German coach to lead the Super Eagles to the 2021 Africa Nations Cup that will take place in Cameroon. Also, he needs to qualify the Nigerian national team for the 2020 World Cup.

The head of the Nigerian Football Federation stated that he was pleased with Rohr’s achievements in coaching the national team. He wants the coach to take the Super Eagles to Qatar this year and bring good results. Rohr’s previous contract was supposed to expire in a few days. Segun Odegbami condemned the football federation for renewing Gernot’s contract after extending it in 2018.

Some Nigerians have slammed Rohr for overlooking domestic league footballers. Sunday Dare, Nigeria’s Sports Minister said that Gernot should start nurturing footballers from the Nigerian league. He further added that as the coach of the Super Eagles, it is his role to improve the standard of soccer in the national team. The minister stated that the coach should scout footballers from the Nigerian Professional Football League as it has quality players.

Rohr will live in Nigeria for a minimum of 10 months per year as he builds a Team B for the West African nation. In an interview by the Cable, the coach expressed his gratitude for the new contract and said that it is not usual for one coach to work with one national team for over six years. Rohr had started building a Nigerian squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers before the country announced its first Coronavirus case in February.

Gernot has a successful managerial career. He has managed several clubs including Bordeaux FC, Eintracht Frankfurt, Etoile Sportive du Sahel, FC Nantes, and the Gabon national football team. The former German footballer has managed the Nigerian Super Eagles for four years. During which, he led the national team to the 2018 World Cup and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
