Nigeria Police Speaks on Alleged Return of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS)

The Nigeria Police Force has denied rumours circulating on social media that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has been revived with a new set of rules.

Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi made this clarification early Monday morning.

He said that the new tactical squads being set up by state police commands to combat various crimes are not a reformation of the disbanded SARS unit.

Adejobi added that each state tactical squad has its unique identification and uniform, and their operatives are accountable to their respective Commissioners of Police (CPs).

He reassured Nigerians that the SARS unit, which was dissolved in 2020 following widespread #EndSARS protests, remains disbanded.

“The Special Anti-Robbery Squad, which was disbanded on October 11, 2020, remains dissolved,” Adejobi said.

Adejobi also revealed that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, will address complaints against operatives of the Special Tactical Squads during his meeting with top police officials today.

He said “The IGP has a meeting with the CPs and above today, Monday, and this will be included on his agenda. The CPs are to control their activities, and we hope this will be addressed once this time around.

“At times, we feel concerned about some complaints we receive at the Force Headquarters.

“The IGP has empowered the CPs and AIGs to take up complaints and act appropriately.

“If it warrants dismissal, they have been empowered to carry on, in line with our laid down procedures. We will never neglect any infractions.”
