Governor Fintiri Bans Tree Felling in Adamawa, Gives Reason

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has announced a ban on tree felling and the burning of wood for charcoal production.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the governor called upon residents who rely on charcoal for cooking to seek alternative energy sources.

Addressing the issue during a gathering with traditional rulers and members of the state House of Assembly, who paid him Sallah homage, Governor Fintiri emphasised that an existing law against tree cutting and deforestation would now be strictly enforced.

“We have reached a firm decision that there should be no felling of trees and production of charcoal,” said Governor Fintiri. “It is time for all of us to actively contribute to implementing the law against tree cutting, which we have neglected in the past.”

Governor Fintiri urged the traditional rulers and members of the state House of Assembly to play their respective roles in enforcing the state’s anti-deforestation law effectively.

During the meeting, he stated, “We must all do our part in our respective capacities. Let’s encourage our people to adopt sustainable alternatives to charcoal for the well-being of our environment.”

Explaining the reasoning behind the ban, the governor highlighted the adverse impact of extensive tree felling for charcoal production, which has contributed to flooding in various areas around the state.

“We have witnessed once flood-free areas now facing frequent floods, leading to the destruction of farms, homes, and valuable assets,” Governor Fintiri added, emphasising the importance of protecting the environment for the benefit of all residents.
