United States Senator Ted Cruz has alleged that the Nigerian government is fully aware that its own policies are fuelling claims of Christian persecution in the country.
In a statement posted on his X account on Friday, Cruz also warned that the Nigerian government is embarking on a public relations campaign aimed at countering the accusations instead of genuine accountability.
“Nigerian officials know their policies have created an environment in which Christians are being persecuted and slaughtered, including their enforcement of Sharia law and their tolerance of Islamist violence,” Cruz said, as reported by Fox News Digital.
“Instead of reversing these policies, they are waging a media campaign to avoid exposure and accountability. I intend to stop them.”
His remarks follow a recent appearance by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, on Piers Morgan Uncensored, where he addressed the allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria.
A few weeks earlier, United States President Donald Trump had designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” citing ongoing attacks on Christians and the Nigerian government’s alleged failure to safeguard religious minorities.
Trump also stated that he had instructed the Department of Defense to prepare for possible military action in Nigeria should the government “continue to allow the killing of Christians.”
However, the Nigerian government has firmly denied persecuting any religious group in the country.
