Nigerians Are Expecting Us to Change Our Country – Tinubu Tells Akpabio, Abbas

Nigeria’s President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has reacted to the election of Godswill Akpabio and Tajudeen Abbas as Senate president and Speaker of the 10th National Assembly, respectively.

The President charged the new National Assembly leaders in a statement on Tuesday, June 13.

Tinubu reminded Akpabio, Abbas, and other leaders of the 10th National Assembly that leadership comes with a massive responsibility, even as he pledged his commitment to work transparently with the National Assembly.

The President’s statement reads: “The election of Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, CON, and Rt. Honourable Tajudeen Abbas as the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 10th National Assembly is a good development.

“I heartily congratulate them and rejoice with the new Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu for their well-deserved victories.“

The President commended them for being elected by their peers to preside over the 10th National Assembly and noted that it was a great honour with a huge responsibility.

Tinubu also sent consolatory messages to Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Honourable Idris Wase and Aminu Jaji, who participated in the National Assembly leadership election.

“I urge them to sustain the same enthusiasm they brought to the leadership contest in discharging their duties to their constituents and Nigeria,“ he said.

The President congratulated all members of the National Assembly, across party lines, who enlisted into the service of the blessed people of our great country.

His words:

“We have all been called upon and accepted the responsibility to diligently and faithfully serve our fatherland with our oath. It is time to get on and move swiftly with the governance business in Nigeria’s service.

“As your President, I am prepared to work transparently with the National Assembly. Nigerians expect distinguished senators and honourable members to make laws and carry out oversight duties that will enhance the government’s performance to achieve successful outcomes, including improving their quality of life.

“Our people look up to us to change the fortunes of our country for good and remove all barriers that impede progress. All of these we can make happen with dedication and commitment.

“We can only achieve all the good things we promised during our campaigns when we work together in harmony but with respect for our respective prerogatives and in the best interest of our country.”
